PROVEN Attributes of Attractiveness

What do you see?

When you look at the face of an attractive person… what is it that draws you in? Is the eyes? The way the bones are structured? Is it the lips, the eyebrows, the gentle, soft expanse of flesh? Is it the hair, the thickness, the shine, the way that hair flows or falls?

Or are you drawn to the body?

Do you like your men chiseled? Broad shoulders and bulging pectorals? Are women with childbearing hips and an hour glass figure your favorite sight? What turns you on and keeps you going? What do you find hot and naughty?

When it comes to what is sexy let us consider the scientifically proven attributes that make us quiver.

Scent of Sex

That’s right, the very smell of your body perspiring is enough to draw others in. What we must consider is that scent is an extremely powerful, marvelously complex intersection of hormones and evolutionary signifiers. Consider research done at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. In this experimental design, men were instructed to wear shirts for two nights without deodorant, and avoiding odorous foods like garlic that would interfere with testing. Then, women were asked to sniff the sweaty shirts. Overwhelmingly, women rated smells most attractive when those smells contained genetic material most different from their own.

Evolution has programmed us to seek mates genetically dissimilar, ensuring that inbreeding is slim. Furthermore, future tests have shown that women prefer smells that are high in testosterone and cortisol, two chemicals that indicate both masculinity and improved immune system functioning. By comparison, men prefer women with higher levels of estrogen—the feminine hormone. Research indicates that men prefer women during the ‘follicular phase’ of their menstrual cycle, seeing women as both more attractive in their faces, and nicer in odor—regardless of perfume or deodorant.

Pheromones are very powerful!

Similar Interests

This one may seem to go against the theory that men and women are attracted to dissimilar traits, but not necessarily. Remember, studies have shown that men and women want partners who are high in the sex hormones, estrogen and testosterone, that differentiate the sexes. However, this does not mean that men and women don’t want to share interest in activities, beliefs, attitudes, and experiences.

Although men and women may unconsciously be attracted to other members of the sex with different genetic material, there is something to be said for similar interests. Think of compatibility in dating websites. Researchers posit that the perfect matches are individuals who have different genetic materials but moderately share interests as well. If partners share too many interests, there is a higher likelihood for growing tired of the same thing. Sure, you can make the argument that more interests mean more things to enjoy together—but this is ironically not the case. Too many shared interests can lead to codependency and boredom. After all, if there are no points of difference, there can be a lack of novelty. On the other hand, if men and women share little interests, there is also a higher risk of relationship deterioration.
